ECOWAS reviews education programmes under vision 2050

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has commenced a strategic review of its major education, science and culture programmes as part of efforts to strengthen human capital development across the region.

The engagement is being organised by the ECOWAS Directorate of Education, Science and Culture (DESC) at Hotel Ecole Le Bene in Lome, Togo, from August 5 to 6, 2026.

The meeting focuses on sharing information on ongoing programmes and examining their contribution to the implementation of the Community’s Vision 2050.

ECOWAS said the initiative aligns with its “human capital development priorities and the implementation of the Community’s Vision 2050.”

The gathering brings together Directors of ECOWAS National Offices, representatives of the Directorate of Administration and General Services, Directorate of Budget and Treasury, Directorate of External Relations, coordinators of the four (04) PARI Programme Consortia and DESC staff.

The regional organisation said the meeting provides an opportunity for stakeholders to review progress, exchange experiences and improve coordination in the implementation of programmes under the education, science and culture directorate.

According to ECOWAS, the event is also intended to strengthen collaboration among its various directorates and national offices while ensuring that regional programmes remain responsive to emerging development needs.

The Community described the meeting as a “presentation and sharing meeting on its major programmes”, highlighting the importance of coordinated action in achieving its long-term objectives.

The discussions are expected to cover the activities and achievements of the various programmes while identifying areas that require improved implementation and cooperation among participating institutions.

ECOWAS further stressed the importance of education, science and culture in achieving sustainable development and deeper regional integration.

The organisation said the engagement would contribute to ensuring that its programmes remain aligned with the aspirations of Vision 2050 and continue to support human capital development across West Africa.

It added that the participation of officials from different directorates and programme consortia would promote “sharing” and a better understanding of ongoing initiatives within the Community.

The two-day meeting is expected to strengthen institutional coordination and provide a platform for ECOWAS stakeholders to collectively assess the direction of its education, science and culture programmes.
