Driver crushed to death as truck overturns on Lagos–Ibadan expressway

A truck driver was crushed to death on Sunday afternoon after his vehicle overturned on the Lagos Ibadan Expressway while trying to avoid concrete barricades reportedly abandoned on the road by contractors.

The fatal crash, which occurred around 2 p.m. amid rainfall, involved a container-laden trailer and a Micra car near the Sanyo area of Ibadan, Oyo State.

An eyewitness, identified as Yusuf, said the accident happened when the truck driver attempted to swerve away from the concrete barriers. “He tried to dodge the barriers left on the road after construction, but in the process, he hit the Micra. The truck lost balance and fell, trapping the driver underneath,” Yusuf recounted.

A Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officer at the scene confirmed the sequence of events, saying, “The truck swerved to avoid the barrier, hit the Micra, dragged it off the road, and eventually fell on it.”

Confirming the incident, the General Manager of the Oyo State Traffic Management Agency (OYTMA), Adeoye Adekola, said the driver died instantly. “We have removed the corpse and deposited it at Adeoyo Hospital, Ring Road. The truck’s container, which was fully loaded with clothes, has been detached and moved to Sanyo Police Station,” he said.

Adekola blamed the crash on impatience, speeding, and the absence of reflectors on the road barriers. “Before the driver noticed the barricade, it was already too late. He tried to swerve, but there was a Micra parked to pick a passenger. That was how the truck overturned,” he explained.

He added that the wreckage had been cleared and normal traffic flow restored.
