DHQ confirms US airstrikes on ISIS targets in Nigeria

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that the United States conducted military airstrikes against Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) targets in Nigeria.

The operation followed the designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” by US President Donald Trump, alongside a pledge to take military action against terrorists linked to years of systematic violence in the country.

According to a statement by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the airstrikes were executed with approval from the Federal Government and formed part of ongoing coordinated efforts to eliminate terrorist and criminal elements threatening national security.

“The strike followed credible intelligence and careful operational planning aimed at degrading the capability of the targeted elements while minimising collateral damage,” Maj.-Gen. Uba said.

He added that the operation underscores Nigeria’s resolve, in collaboration with strategic partners, to confront transnational terrorism and prevent foreign fighters from establishing or expanding footholds within the country.

Maj.-Gen. Uba reaffirmed the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s commitment to protecting lives and property and supporting joint and inter-agency initiatives to restore lasting peace and security nationwide.
