Court sentences man to clean premises for over streetlight vandalism

A Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Wuse, Abuja, on Monday sentenced a 24-year-old man, Gabriel Peter, to two hours of community service for vandalising four solar-powered streetlights.

Presiding Magistrate Hafsat Amiru directed that Peter clean the court premises between 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on 23 June 2025. She also cautioned him to refrain from further criminal activity and to conduct himself properly going forward.

Peter had pleaded guilty to a charge of mischief filed against him by the police.

The prosecutor, Simba Ibrahim, informed the court that the defendant was apprehended by ASP Gambo Jume and his team on 18 June 2025 along Airport Road, Abuja, during the movement of the presidential convoy.

Ibrahim explained that Peter was caught in the act of vandalising the solar-powered streetlights. Investigators recovered several cut pieces of solar light wires from him.

The charge contravenes Section 327 of the Penal Code.

Having admitted guilt, Peter pleaded for leniency before sentencing was pronounced.
