Lagos State is targeting the establishment of 29 compressed natural gas (CNG) refuelling stations by the first quarter of 2028 as it intensifies efforts to expand access to cheaper fuel and encourage motorists to switch from petrol.
The Managing Director of Ibile Oil and Gas Corporation, Tayo Gbajumo, disclosed the plan ahead of the Lagos Energy Summit scheduled for November 10 to 12.
According to the MD, Lagos is targeting 19 CNG stations by the first quarter of 2027 before increasing the number to 29 by the first quarter of 2028.
He also revealed plans to commission five additional CNG stations in November, with the expansion expected to increase the number of facilities available to motorists.
The expansion comes amid growing interest in CNG as an alternative to petrol, particularly among commercial transport operators seeking to reduce fuel expenses.
However, access to refuelling facilities remains an important consideration for motorists looking to make the switch, as availability and waiting times can affect the convenience of using the fuel.
Vehicle conversion also requires an upfront investment, with the cost reportedly ranging from ₦700,000 to ₦1 million, depending on the vehicle and conversion system.
The state’s planned expansion is expected to increase the availability of CNG refuelling infrastructure and support wider adoption of the fuel.
Lagos has identified locations including Agege, Ojota and Oshodi among areas with existing CNG facilities.
