CIoD Nigeria hosts 2024 annual directors’ dinner, awards night, honours leaders in Governance

The Chartered Institute of Directors Nigeria (CIoD Nigeria) hosted its 2024 Annual Directors’ Dinner and Awards Night on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at the Civic Center, Victoria Island, Lagos. The prestigious event, themed “Celebrating Resilience, Excellence, and Leadership,” served as a platform to recognize and honour individuals and organizations that have demonstrated excellence in corporate governance and ethical leadership.

The event, chaired by renowned economist and President of the African School of Governance, Professor Kingsley Moghalu, OON, drew an impressive array of dignitaries. In attendance were chief executives of key regulatory institutions, including the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX), and the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRC). Also present were presidents of professional institutes, business membership organizations, captains of industry, and top government officials.

In his keynote address, Alhaji Tijjani M. Borodo, President and Chairman of the Governing Council of CIoD Nigeria, welcomed guests with a message underscoring the importance of good governance, ethical leadership, and integrity in advancing Nigeria’s corporate sector.

Borodo commended Professor Kingsley Moghalu for his unwavering advocacy for good governance, describing him as a source of inspiration. He also extended gratitude to other distinguished guests, members, and stakeholders who have supported the Institute’s mission to promote excellence in corporate governance.

This year’s Annual Directors’ Dinner was particularly significant as it marked the first edition of the event following CIoD Nigeria’s attainment of its charter status. Borodo noted that the enactment of the Institute’s charter by the National Assembly on May 26, 2023, and its subsequent assent by former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, triggered important changes in the Institute’s governance structure.

Key among these changes is the dissolution of the Executive Committee, the transformation of policy committees into sectoral groups, and the reconstitution of the Governing Council. Borodo explained that these changes are aimed at strengthening the Institute’s governance framework and improving its capacity to lead Nigeria’s corporate governance space.

“This year’s edition of ADD is spectacularly unique in that, in addition to the annual awards for excellence in various categories, there will also be appreciation awards for many leaders in CIoD Nigeria who have served the Institute meritoriously over the years,” Borodo said.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of awards and special recognitions. Seven Past Presidents and 16 Executive Committee chairmen were honoured for their invaluable contributions to the growth of the Institute. Borodo paid special tribute to these leaders, describing them as trailblazers whose wisdom and commitment have propelled CIoD Nigeria’s growth for over 41 years.

“We sincerely thank you for your dedicated service to CIoD Nigeria and look forward to your continued support and contributions in other capacities whenever called upon in the future,” Borodo said.

One of the main features of the night was the presentation of individual and corporate awards to outstanding leaders and organizations. The awardees were recognized for their exemplary leadership, vision, and contributions to corporate governance in Nigeria.

Borodo congratulated the award recipients, stating, “Your achievements are a testament to your hard work, dedication, and commitment to excellence. We are proud to recognize your achievements tonight and look forward to seeing more stellar impact of your pursuit of good governance and forthright leadership in the years to come.”

The CIoD Nigeria President urged directors and leaders in both the private and public sectors to prioritize integrity, transparency, and accountability in their roles. He emphasized that leadership should be driven by a commitment to ethical standards and sustainable growth.

“As we celebrate tonight, let us not forget the significance of our roles as directors and leaders. We have a responsibility to lead with integrity, vision, and courage. And we have a responsibility to make a positive impact on our organizations, our communities, and our society,” Borodo stated.

The CIoD Nigeria’s Annual Directors’ Dinner and Awards Night remains one of the most anticipated events in Nigeria’s corporate sector, bringing together leaders from various industries to celebrate excellence in governance. With its new governance structure in place, the Institute is poised to drive greater impact in promoting corporate governance standards in Nigeria.

Borodo concluded his remarks with a call for continuous support and collaboration among members, stakeholders, and sponsors, as CIoD Nigeria embarks on a new era of growth and excellence.

“As we celebrate tonight, let us work towards a brighter future for our Institute and a better future for Nigeria, one characterized by transparency, accountability, and sustainable growth,” he affirmed.
