Councillor Christopher Adegoke has been elected as the Chairman of the Nottinghamshire County Council, becoming the first Black and minority ethnic individual to hold the prestigious position since the council’s establishment in 1889.

Councillor Adegoke was officially elected on Thursday, May 14, 2026, breaking a 137-year demographic streak and marking a massive victory for diversity and inclusive representation in British public service.

Adegoke’s election to the role of Chairman and First Citizen of Nottinghamshire follows a distinguished career spanning over two decades. His extensive background bridges the sectors of international education, public administration, and grassroots community leadership.

Speaking immediately after his appointment, Chairman Adegoke expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity, stating that he looks forward to actively engaging with residents, community organizations, and local businesses to drive the county forward during his tenure.

The historic election has triggered widespread celebration, particularly within the international diaspora.
