Role Summary
The News Editor will review and refine editorial copy to improve clarity, accuracy, consistency, readability, and adherence to Nigerian NewsDirect’s house style before publication.
Key Responsibilities
- Edit news reports, features, opinion pieces, and other assigned editorial content
- Improve sentence structure, grammar, flow, clarity, and readability without distorting meaning
- Check names, dates, figures, titles, quotations, and other factual details
- Ensure stories follow Nigerian NewsDirect’s editorial style, tone, and formatting requirements
- Flag unsupported claims, inconsistencies, legal sensitivities, and potential ethical concerns
- Work with reporters and editors to resolve queries and improve copy
- Meet production and publication deadlines
- Maintain consistency across headlines, captions, body copy, and related editorial material
- Ensure that edits preserve the writer’s intended meaning and the integrity of the story
Qualifications and Requirements
- Minimum of Bsc. in English, Journalism, Mass Communication, or a related field
- At least 2 years of experience in editing, proofreading, journalism, or publishing
- Excellent command of written English and grammar
- Strong fact-checking, critical-reading, and attention-to-detail skills
- Familiarity with editorial workflows and style guides
- A portfolio of edited or published work must be submitted
