Better pay must translate into decisive victory

Better pay must translate into decisive victory

For too long, the discourse surrounding national security in Nigeria has been bogged down by the stark contrast between the gravity of the sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform and the modest realities of their economic welfare.

Soldiers, sailors, and airmen standing in the line of fire face relentless dangers across varied conflict theaters, often leaving their families behind to secure a fragile peace.

President Bola Tinubu’s fulfillment of his commitment to overhaul military compensation delivering substantial salary increases ranging from 30 to 80 percent for roughly 250,000 armed forces personnel marks a historic and commendable departure from past lip service. By prioritizing troop welfare and moving to alleviate the financial pressures bearing down on the barracks, this administration has taken a vital step toward restoring dignity and motivation to those who bear the armor of the state.

Yet, public commendation for this administrative milestone must be matched by an uncompromising gaze at the harsh reality still unfolding across our landscapes. Insecurity continues to cast a long, painful shadow over the country, and innocent lives are still being tragically cut short by insurgents, bandits, and criminal syndicates. Financial incentives and improved pay structures, while deeply necessary, are ultimately instruments meant to serve a higher strategic purpose: the total restoration of peace and territorial integrity.

A well-remunerated military must inherently be a more formidable, aggressive, and result-oriented force.

Now that the federal government has answered the call to boost morale and invest heavily in the human capital of defense, the armed forces must rise to meet this gesture with an equivalent measure of operational excellence. The nation expects nothing less than a renewed tactical offensive, tighter coordination, and a swift transformation of institutional motivation into multiple, undeniable victories on the battlefield. Every liberated community, every rescued captive, and every neutralized threat must serve as the true metric of return on this national investment.

The time has come for our gallant troops to seize this moment of renewed backing, silence the drums of terror once and for all and reclaim every inch of our homeland.
