Benue, Taraba Governors hold border security talks over fresh violence

Gov. Agbu Kefas of Taraba State and Gov. Hyacinth Alia of Benue State on Tuesday held bilateral talks to address renewed violence along the border communities of both states.

The high-level meeting, convened in Wukari LGA of Taraba, brought together traditional rulers, community leaders, security chiefs and civil society representatives to discuss coordinated responses to killings, displacement and destruction of property in affected areas.

The governors emphasised collaboration in the deployment of security personnel, intelligence sharing and strengthening of community-based surveillance across Takum, Donga, Ussa and adjoining border communities.

Traditional rulers from impacted areas were engaged to support peacebuilding efforts, reconciliation and trust among communities.

Plans were also outlined to provide relief materials to displaced persons, restore access to farmlands and markets, and reopen schools affected by the unrest.
Gov. Kefas said insecurity along the border requires a unified approach, adding that the meeting was aimed at delivering practical outcomes.

Gov. Alia stressed the need for sustained collaboration between both states to prevent further escalation.
The development comes amid wider concerns over insecurity in parts of Northern Nigeria. Governors in the region have previously advocated reforms, including the creation of state police and decentralisation of security architecture to enhance local response.

Meanwhile, in Abuja, Pres. Bola Tinubu urged state governors to promote inclusive governance and strengthen community cohesion to address security challenges.

The joint meeting in Wukari is expected to issue a communiqué outlining agreed measures and timelines for implementation.
