Belfast unrest: Avoid inciteful comments, embrace unity — NIDCOM urges Residents

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has urged residents in Belfast to avoid inciteful comments and embrace unity.

The Commission’s advisory follows reports of unrest and isolated incidents affecting parts of Belfast, Northern Ireland.

In a statement by the Director, Media, Public Relations and Protocols of the Commission, Mr. Abdur-Rahman Balogun, NIDCOM expressed concern over the situation and extends its thoughts to all individuals and families affected by the disturbances.

According to the Commission’s Chairman, Hon.Abike Dabiri-Erewa, she said, “Whenever communities experience moments of tension, it is important that we do not allow isolated incidents to divide us, but rather strengthen our commitment to peace, dialogue, and mutual respect.”

The Commission further underscored the need for restraint, understanding, and respect for law and order during this sensitive period.

The Commission also acknowledged the efforts of community leaders and organisations working on the ground to promote unity, understanding, and responsible engagement across all groups.

In a recent BBC interview, a prominent Nigerian community leader in Northern Ireland, Mr. Jahswill Emmanuel, founder of Multi-Ethnic Sports and Cultures Northern Ireland (MSCNI), expressed sadness over the situation and extended his condolences to the victims and their family.

He emphasised the importance of standing with those affected while continuing to work collectively to maintain stability within the community.

Emmanuel further noted that migrant communities, including Nigerians, remain committed to contributing positively to Northern Ireland.

He called for unity and responsible engagement, stressing that isolated incidents should not be allowed to divide communities. He also highlighted the importance of working closely with law enforcement and taking shared responsibility in preventing further escalation.

NIDCOM reaffirmed its commitment to the safety, dignity, and welfare of Nigerians in the diaspora.

It urges all residents to remain law-abiding and avoid actions or statements that may heighten tensions, while continuing to promote peaceful coexistence, understanding, and mutual respect.

The Commission noted that it will continue to engage relevant stakeholders and monitor the situation in the interest of Nigerians in the diaspora.
