The Bayelsa State Government, in collaboration with Bayelsa Medical University (BMU) and key stakeholders, is set to launch a comprehensive training and sensitisation programme aimed at tackling drug and substance abuse in the state.

The initiative, scheduled for Wednesday, 5 March 2025, will take place at the Main Auditorium of Bayelsa Medical University. It is designed to equip educational institutions with the necessary tools to curb the rising trend of drug abuse among students.

According to the Bayelsa State Drug Abuse Addiction Prevention and Rehabilitation Committee (BADAPARC), the programme is open to BMU staff, students, and the general public. The committee stressed that drug abuse is a societal issue that affects everyone, either directly or indirectly, and requires a collective effort to combat.

In its latest bulletin, BADAPARC highlighted the pivotal role of educational institutions in fostering a drug-free society.

“Directly or indirectly, drug abuse impacts everyone. This menace is a collective concern, and individuals, corporate bodies, religious groups, and educational institutions all have crucial roles to play in addressing this crisis,” the committee stated.

The event will feature expert speakers from various organisations actively engaged in combating drug abuse, offering valuable insights and strategies for prevention and rehabilitation.

The Bayelsa State Government has received commendation for its continued efforts in the fight against drug abuse. BADAPARC particularly praised the leadership of Governor Senator Douye Diri, alongside Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo and the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Professor Seiyefa Brisibe, for their dedication to addressing drug-related challenges in the state.

“We sincerely commend the government of Bayelsa State, led by His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri, for his unwavering commitment to tackling drug abuse in the state.

“We also appreciate the tireless efforts of the resourceful Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, and the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Professor Seiyefa Brisibe,” the committee stated.

The programme is expected to enhance awareness, provide preventive measures, and encourage collective action in the fight against drug and substance abuse in Bayelsa State.
