 ​‌‌⁠⁠⁠‍⁠⁠‌‍​‍⁠​⁠⁠⁠‌​An auditor, Umyime Akpan was on Monday docked in a Chief Magistrates’ Court in Life Camp, Abuja for allegedly swindling his  employer of N24.3 million.

Akpan is charged with criminal conspiracy, breach of trust, cheating, using counterfeit documents, theft and criminal misappropriation.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Prosecution Counsel, Charity Nwachukwu, told the court that the complainant, Mr Uzidem Etuk, Managing Director of Starview Palace Hotel Gwarinpa, Abuja reported the matter at the Life Camp Police Command on Aug 3.

Nwachukwu told the court that the complainant made the defendant and one Peter Bisong, who is a former General Manager, co-signatory to the hotel’s account for daily expenses.

She said that the hotel account had a maximum of N400,000 daily withdrawal for the running of the hotel.

Nwachukwu said that the defendant and the hotel account officer went above the maximum daily withdrawals on the account.

The prosecutor said that during police investigation the defendant confessed that after the GM resigned in February 2025, he used the column meant for the second signatory to withdraw N24.3 million.

She said that the defendant made a confessional statement admitting to the offence.

According to her, the offence contravenes the provisions of Sections 97, 312, 364, 287, and 399 of the Penal Code.

Chief Magistrate Musa Jobbo admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum.

Jobbo ordered that the sureties must provide a valid means of identification and must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

He adjourned the case until Sept. 9 for hearing.
