ASERC seeks collaboration with NSCDC to protect power infrastructure

The Anambra Electricity Regulatory Commission (ASERC) Wednesday called for collaboration with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to secure electricity infrastructure in the state.

The Chairman, ASERC, Prof. Frank Okafor, made the call when he paid a courtesy visit to the state Commandant of the NSCDC, Maku Olatunde.

Okafor said that the measure would help the commission serve the people better.

According to him, ASERC is ready to explore new areas of collaboration with the NSCDC to secure electricity infrastructure in the state.

“Already there are ongoing joint initiatives aimed at improving reliability and expanding supply within our franchise areas.

”Therefore there is the need for stronger collaboration with the corps to further strengthen regulatory frameworks and support the ongoing transformation in line with the provisions of the Anambra Electricity Law.’’

He explained that ASERC was saddled with the responsibility of licensing of electricity businesses, protection of consumer rights, enforcement of technical and safety standards, and resolution of disputes within the state’s electricity sector.

The ASERC chairman also explained that the commission was established to enhance power supply management in the state as well as strengthen regulatory collaboration with relevant stakeholders to advance the development of the evolving electricity market.

Responding, Olatunde promised to explore areas of mutual collaboration with ASERC, in order to deepen the protection of power infrastructure against vandalism.

He said that the collaboration would also shield electricity consumers in the state against exploitation, adding that the corps mandate was to protect critical national, state and local government assets, maintaining public order and safeguarding lives and property.

The commandant said the role of the NSCDC would help drive regulatory innovation, improve electricity access and boost the sustainability of Nigeria’s power sector.

The NSCDC boss expressed confidence that the commission would bring positive change to the state’s power sector, noting that stable electricity was vital for economic development and improved living standards.

He urged the commission to be transparent and effective in their operations, adding that earning public confidence was essential for successful regulation.
