Anambra: Police arrest two suspected cultists, armed robbers, recover arms, illicit items
The Anambra State Police Command has apprehended two suspected cult members and armed robbers in separate operations, seizing firearms and other incriminating materials.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the arrests and detentions in a statement issued on Sunday in Onitsha.
According to Ikenga, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, reaffirmed the command’s dedication to tackling criminal activities and maintaining public security across the state.
He stated: ”On 22nd March, police operatives attached to the Obosi Division, during an intelligence-driven patrol along the Obosi/Nkpor Road, arrested one Kosiso Okonkwo (male) and recovered a Beretta pistol from him.
“The suspect admitted to being affiliated with the Aye Confraternity.”
Ikenga further disclosed that officers from ‘B’ Division carried out a separate operation, leading to another arrest.
“In collaboration with Mobile Police personnel from the 29 Squadron, the operatives conducted a stop-and-search exercise at approximately 9:20 p.m. along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway in Amansea.
“During the operation, a tricycle bearing registration number BBG 767 QH, driven by a male suspect dressed in Army camouflage trousers, was intercepted.
“Upon questioning, the suspect was unable to provide a plausible explanation for his actions, prompting a thorough search.
“The operatives discovered a Beretta pistol, seven live rounds of ammunition, ¦ 15,600 in cash, substances believed to be illicit drugs, and charms,” he said.
Ikenga quoted the Commissioner of Police as ordering the immediate transfer of the case to the Command’s Tactical Unit for a comprehensive investigation.
He reassured the public that the command remains resolute in its efforts to curb criminal activities and uphold security across Anambra State.
