Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State says his administration is committed to the development of sports at the grassroots and as a tool for youth engagement, healthy living, and social cohesion.

Aiyedatiwa, who said this on Saturday in Akure at the 2025 Olympic Day Run, described sports as a rallying point for peace.

The governor, represented by the Deputy Governor, Olayide Adelami, described sports as a means of promoting physical and mental well-being among citizens, especially the youths.

“Today, we gather to celebrate the spirit of sportsmanship, unity and excellence that defines the Olympic Games.

“As we flag-off this run, we are reminded of the transformative power of sports to shape individuals, communities and societies.

“This annual global celebration of the birth of the Olympic movement was put together to encourage everyone around the world to play active roles in sports and experience the Olympic values in their countries.

“The Olympic Day Run is aimed at promoting sports by bringing together hundreds of thousands of people across the globe.

“It also aims to share the Olympics spirit with the people of all ages and from all walks of life.

“As a government, it is our priority to key into the objectives of the Olympic celebration in Nigeria, among which is to cement national unity and grassroots sports development,” he said.

Aiyedatiwa explained that sports played a pivotal role in fostering unity across cultural and religious divides while creating a sense of belonging and shared identity.

According to him, the event brings together athletes, sports enthusiasts and citizens by promoting unity, teamwork and sportsmanship.

Earlier, Mr Sylvester Ikuejamoye, Representative of the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC), commended the state government for recognising the significance of Olympic Day and providing the necessary support for its observance.

“The commitment of Ondo State to this global event is a clear demonstration of its forward-thinking approach to youth and sports development,” he noted.

Also, Mr Segun Giwa, Chairman, Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ondo State Chapter, emphasised the importance of consistent government investment in grassroots sports and stressed the role of media in promoting sporting values.

Similarly, Mrs Tolulope Adeyemi, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youths and Sports, reaffirmed the ministry’s dedication to promoting regular sporting activities as a means of building stronger and healthier
communities.

News Men report that the event featured a walk from the Government House through Oba Adesida Road to the sports complex with athletes and other stakeholders.
