…Declares three-day mourning
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the federal administration under President Bola Tinubu of seeking to capitalise on the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari for political purposes.
In a statement issued on Monday and signed by Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, Interim National Publicity Secretary of the ADC and Spokesperson for the Opposition Coalition, the party announced a three-day national mourning period beginning Tuesday, 15 July 2025. The party said all political activities and public engagements across its chapters would be suspended during the period as a mark of respect for the late president.
“Regardless of political affiliations, what cannot be denied is that President Buhari served this country with a fierce sense of duty and personal conviction. He inspired millions across social divides, especially the poor, who adored and stood with him throughout his political sojourn and beyond,” the statement read.
The ADC paid tribute to Buhari’s legacy, describing his life and leadership as symbols of integrity, discipline, and selfless public service.
However, the party expressed strong disapproval of tributes pouring in from the APC and the Tinubu-led administration, accusing them of double standards.
According to the statement, “It is regrettable that the same government and political party that spent the last two years tarnishing his records, dismantling his legacies and blaming him for every one of their failings, are now posturing as chief mourners at his burial.”
The ADC cautioned Buhari’s family and loyalists against what it described as “political opportunism,” alleging that some within the ruling party were attempting to turn the national mourning into a vehicle for political gain.
“It is important that those closest to the late President remain vigilant and resist any attempt to exploit this moment of national loss for self-serving ends,” the party added.
Concluding the statement, Abdullahi urged Nigerians to honour Buhari’s memory by insisting on a higher moral code from those in public office.
“Let his memory be a mirror that reflects the personal ethics we must insist on from leadership for generations to come,” he said.
