Adamawa Guber Poll: Confusion as REC declares APC woman candidate winner

…Disregard his declaration — INEC

…Says he usurped power, action null, void, of no effect

…Suspends collation

…Game plan ploy by INEC to upturn democratic wishes – Atiku

Confusion set into Nigeria’s political space over a drama played by the Adamawa State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Yunusa Hudu Ari, in the early hours of Sunday, sneaking into the state governorship collation centre to declare candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed, winner of the governorship poll.

According to the official results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Binani prior to her declaration was trailing behind Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, who had established a margin lead of 31,249 votes.

However, Fintiri despite polling 421,524 votes to defeat Binani who polled 390,275 votes could not be returned by the State returning officer, Professor Mohammed Mele, a Professor of English and Linguistics from the University of Maiduguri, on the grounds of insufficiency of the margin which did not exceed the number of cancelled votes in 69 polling units with total number of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) collected of 37,016.

However, at the resumption of the collation of results from the supplementary polls, which was held across the State on Saturday, to conclude the Adamawa governorship election exercise.

Confusion set in on Sunday morning as the Adamawa REC, who had abruptly suspended the collation exercise until 11am on Sunday, appeared at the collation centre around 9:00am to declare Binani the winner.

Fintiri in the results declared prior to the odd declaration was in the lead from the results of 10 councils so far declared in the supplementary polls.

Results from the 10 councils had showed Fintiri adding to his lead of 31,249 emerging winner in Demsa, Lamurde, Jada, Ganye, Song, Maiha, Hong and Shelleng councils, while Binani won only in Yola North and Yola South out of 10 council areas so far released.

…Disregard his declaration – INEC

Meanwhile, INEC in a tweet on its official Twitter handle told Nigerians to disregard the action of the Adamawa REC, who it accused of usurping the powers of the Returning Officer, Professor Mohammed Mele, and proceeded in announcing the results of the polls that had yet to be tallied and concluded.

INEC consequently invited Yunusa over the declaration.

The Commission on Sunday via its Twitter handle noted that the process has clearly not been concluded before he made the announcement, declaring his action, “null, void and of no effect.”

“The attention of the Commission has been drawn to a purported declaration of winner in the Adamawa Governorship election by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) even when the process has clearly not been concluded.

“The action of the REC is a usurpation of the power of the Returning Officer. It is null, void and of no effect. Consequently, the collation of results of the supplementary election is hereby suspended.

“The REC, Returning Officer and all involved are hereby invited to the Commission’s Headquarters in Abuja immediately. Detailed statement to follow shortly.”

…Game plan ploy by INEC to up-turn democratic wishes — Atiku

Meanwhile in reaction, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the general elections, Atiku Abubakar, described the action as a ploy by INEC “to compromise the electoral wishes of the people of Adamawa State,” with “a preset agenda of declaring the APC at all cost.”

Atiku said that the Adamawa people won’t avail themselves to be “cheated three times in a row.”

In a statement by Paul Ibe, media aide to the PDP presidential flagbearer, Atiku called on Nigerians to the “game plan of trying to upturn the democratic wishes of the people of Adamawa State in the governorship election in the state.”

Atiku said the initial decision of the REC in Adamawa State to declare the APC candidate, Binani, as the winner of the election, is a case study “to the shambolic nature of the 2023 elections in general.”

“In Adamawa, we are witnesses to a novel practice in election management where a Resident Electoral Commissioner announced the loser of an election as a winner.

“It is not in doubt that INEC has approached the Adamawa State election with a preset agenda of declaring the APC at all cost.

“It is, therefore, on this note that we wish to call the attention of the world to the scheme being perpetrated by INEC to compromise the electoral wishes of the people of Adamawa State.

“We also wish to inform the world that such behaviour by INEC has a natural consequence of unsettling the peace and security of the society.

“We have seen how INEC conducted the February 25 and March 18 elections against the run of play and challenging cheated candidates to go to the court, knowing full well the agenda that they are up to.

“It must be put on record that the people of Adamawa State will not allow themselves to cheated three times in a row. It must also be put on record that whatever the consequences of the scheme being scripted, both the INEC and those vested with state powers should be blamed for the consequences of such actions.

“That the APC candidate has a prepared acceptance speech is a pointer to the guarantee of a false victory which the INEC must have promised her.

“It is also our demand that the Adamawa REC and any other parties complicit in this treasonable act should be arrested immediately and prosecuted to the full extent of the law to serve as a deterrent to anti-democratic forces who may want to torpedo our democracy and provoke violence in our country,” he said.

Baba Eto’s factional mandate movement dismissed by presidency insiders

In a recent development, Cardinal James Odunmbaku, popularly known as Baba Eto, and his allies have come under scrutiny for attempting to create a factional Mandate Movement group within the Lagos State All Progressive Congress (APC).

Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has reportedly informed his close associates that he has never instructed Baba Eto, Tayo Ayinde, the Chief of Staff to the Governor of Lagos State, or anyone else to create a factional group.

According to sources, the President has communicated to some of his close associates that he is currently working round the clock to find lasting solutions to the economic situation facing the country. However, all Eto could do was create a political crisis for personal gains.

On Wednesday, 28th February 2024, Baba Eto and his associates organized a meeting at GRA Ikeja, dubbing it the “Mandate Lagos CWC inauguration.” Reacting to the news, Chief Olu Arulogun, the chairman of all chairmen of The Mandate Movement, under the leadership of Abdullahi Ayinde Enilolobo, challenged Eto to cease misleading members and Lagosians with his individual agenda.

The Mandate Movement, with its extensive structure across zones, wards, LGAs, and states, has been in existence since its establishment and was further stretched across the federation by Enilolobo and others during the campaign period to support Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Enilolobo currently serves as the Lagos State Chairman of the Mandate Movement, emphasizing that the group has thrived across the federation.

Chief Olu Arulogun, while advising Eto to avoid creating unnecessary crises, urged Nigerians to maintain hope and continue praying for the success of President Tinubu.

Finally, Arulogun stated that the purported inauguration preparations, including the administration of the oath of allegiance by the Eto minority camp using the name of The Mandate Movement, lack legitimacy. The general public is hereby advised, as the leadership of the group is entirely unaware of such an event.

Shaibu storms PDP secretariat for Certificate of Return, threatens legal action

The crisis in PDP took a dramatic twist on Wednesday as Edo Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, stormed the party secretariat demanding issued the of certificate of return for winning Edo PDP gubernatorial primary election.

Mr Asue Ighodalo, equally as the candidate of the party in another primary held same day in the same city.

NAN further reports that Ighodalo was issued the certificate of return on Monday by the PDP National Working Committee (NWC).

The PDP acting National Chairman, Malam Umar Damagum, presented the certificate to Ighodalo at a ceremony at the party’ss National Secretariat at Wadata Plaza, Zone 5 Wuse, Abuja.

Damagum while presenting the certificate said that the party was united in its drive to retain the Edo governor’s seat.

According to him, “PDP is one and the party organised and recognised only the primary election which took place at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin and produced Ighodalo as its candidate.’’

Surprisingly, Shaibu came to the party secretariat insisting he was the authentic winner of the party primary for the election and should be issued the certificate of return.

He said it was not a surprise that he came for the certificate, as the PDP guidelines for Edo 2024 governorship primary, had approved Feb. 28 for the issuance of the certificate.

“Why I am here is to obey the guidelines to come and receive the certificate of return and I was told that somebody else came yesterday and was given the certificate.

“I think the court will tell among us who is the real candidate, but I am here in fulfillment of the electoral guidelines of the PDP to receive my certificate.

“I have a document here where those that conducted the primary submitted same to the office of the National Organising Secretary. From this document you will see the mess that took place in Edo.

“This primary cannot be put aside. I am ready for us to correct the abnormalities in the party’s internal democracy because that is the beginning of the sustenance of democracy in the country.

According to him, if the party does not get it right, the foundation of our democracy is already been threatened.

“We will not fold our hands and watch what we laboured for being destroyed. Some people died in the process,’’ he said.

Shaibu, who alleged that the party’s primary was compromised from the onset, demanding that all observed abnormalities must be corrected.

He also alleged that those who conducted his faction’s primary election submitted its report nut unfortunately were being threatened to re-write another report.

“This is a committee that was put together by the NWC. If the PDP is serious and ready to win Edo, they must do what is right.

“I am telling our members in Edo not to be worried; we will get to the promise land.

“Edo will be the place where we will reset how internal democracy can be strengthened so that the foundation of democracy is not destroyed,’’ he said.

Shaibu said he had earlier informed party leaders that he would go for his certificate of return, but was surprised that none of them was in the office except secretariat staff.

“I don’t know why they are not here. That is strange,’’ he said.

Shaibu said he would have no option than to go to court if the party leaders refuse to issue him the certificate of return as the party‘s candidate.

According to him, if the party internal mechanism is followed there will not be need to go to court.

“But, if the party is not ready to listen, the next line of action will be the judiciary, but I pray we don’t get there and that is why I came here today,’’ he said.
