Abiola’s fight birthed our modern democracy – Ododo

Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has said the late Abiola remains a pillar of Nigeria’s democratic consciousness, saying that his sacrifice laid the foundation for the nation’s modern democracy.
In his Democracy Day message on Friday, the governor said June 12 remains a significant reminder of the sacrifices made by heroes of democracy and the enduring strength of democratic ideals shaping Nigeria.
Ododo stated that democracy remains the most credible platform through which citizens exercise their sovereign will, choose their leaders and hold governments accountable, despite the challenges confronting the nation noting that democracy has continued to provide the framework for peace, development, participation and the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms.
The governor also called on Nigerians to remain committed to preserving and protecting the nation’s democracy, stressing that the gains enjoyed today were secured through years of struggle, sacrifice and unwavering commitment by patriots who believed in a better Nigeria urging citizens to reject actions capable of undermining democratic institutions and instead strengthen the values of tolerance, dialogue, unity and responsible citizenship.
Ododo also congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing him as one of the foremost champions of democracy in Nigeria.
According to him, Tinubu stood firmly with other patriots during some of the most difficult periods in the country’s democratic evolution, noting that democracy has now afforded him the opportunity to serve at the nation’s highest level.
The governor called on Nigerians to continue supporting and praying for the country, the President and leaders at all levels, noting that nation-building remains a collective responsibility.
Paying tribute to Abiola, Ododo noted that the late business mogul and politician had the wealth and influence to ignore the struggle or compromise democratic ideals but chose to stand for the people.
“Abiola was wealthy enough to ignore service to his people. He was powerful enough to reach compromises and bury our democracy. But he chose to fight for us and his fight birthed our modern democracy,” he said.
He added that Abiola would continue to be remembered as the foundation of Nigeria’s greatness and democratic advancement.
Ododo, on behalf of the government and people of Kogi State, wished Nigerians a memorable Democracy Day celebration and urged renewed commitment to building a stronger nation where democracy continues to deliver hope, justice, opportunity and prosperity for all.
