Kwara State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has sanctioned the release of ₦5.25 million to cover the medical bills of 13 students of Kwara origin at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), who were badly injured in a recent road crash in Kebbi State.

The students were travelling back to school along the Yauri–Sokoto expressway when their vehicle was involved in a fatal accident that claimed the life of the driver and left others with serious injuries.

A statement by the Governor’s Special Assistant on Students’ Affairs, Hon. Wasiu Onidugbe, confirmed that the funds would cover urgent medical procedures, including surgeries, scans, and other treatments prescribed by UDUS Teaching Hospital, Sokoto.

“The Governor has released ₦5,250,000 to cover the cost of tests, scans, and other procedures and treatments itemised by the hospital,” the statement read.

Eight of the students reportedly sustained multiple bone fractures requiring immediate surgical intervention, while five others remain under intensive medical care at the university’s teaching hospital.

Hon. Onidugbe, who delivered a personal message of sympathy from the Governor, assured the students of the state government’s full support for their complete recovery and return to their studies.

He added that Governor AbdulRazaq had instructed close engagement with UDUS management to ensure the injured students’ academic progress is not hampered during their recovery period.

“The Governor was deeply moved by the incident and has taken steps to liaise with UDUS authorities to safeguard the academic future of the affected students,” Onidugbe said.

He reaffirmed the government’s steadfast commitment to the welfare of its people, particularly students, irrespective of their location, stressing that ensuring the safety and well-being of Kwara indigenes remains a priority for the administration.
