A marriage lost: The struggle of anger and misunderstanding

This is the story of my Aunt and her marriage, which ultimately fell apart due to unresolved anger and constant misunderstandings. My Aunt had always struggled with her temper. Over the years, I tried to advise her many times to work on it, but she never took it seriously.
Despite her fiery nature, her husband, Mr. Dele, was the complete opposite: he was a patient, kind man who continuously tried his best to handle her emotional outbursts with understanding.
However, as time passed, the emotional toll it took on him began to change him. He grew quieter, more withdrawn, and began to retreat into himself. Over time, my Aunt became increasingly frustrated, complaining that Mr. Dele was never home and wasn’t providing for her in the way he used to.
Her concerns seemed to be growing, but my mother, sensing something deeper, decided to call Mr. Dele to hear his side of the story. When she spoke to him, he explained everything that had been happening between them the arguments, her short temper, and how it had been wearing on him for years.
After their conversation, my Aunt promised my mother that she would try to change, to be more patient and understanding with her husband. But sadly, just two weeks later, things took a dramatic turn. One evening, Mr. Dele came home late, explaining that he had been caught in traffic.
However, my Aunt, who had been waiting anxiously, didn’t believe his explanation and immediately became furious. Her temper flared uncontrollably. In a split second, she slapped him across the face and grabbed his shirt, shaking him in her anger.
Mr. Dele, as always, tried to remain calm and detached, attempting to leave the tense situation before it escalated further. But my Aunt, still consumed by rage, refused to let go. In her fury, she grabbed a knife from the kitchen. In an instant, she slashed his hand, and the blade came dangerously close to his stomach.
The situation was out of control. Fortunately, I happened to be there, and I rushed into the room just in time to intervene. I managed to stop her before things got even worse, but the damage had already been done.
That night, Mr. Dele made a painful decision. He realised he could no longer continue in the marriage. The emotional and physical toll of living in such a volatile environment had taken its toll on him. He refused to engage with the family anymore, choosing to distance himself from the chaos that had become their life together.
In the end, despite the efforts of both sides, the marriage fell apart. My Aunt’s inability to control her anger, combined with the constant misunderstandings, ultimately led to the dissolution of their relationship.
It was a sad and painful chapter in both their lives, but it was a stark reminder of how unresolved emotions and a lack of communication can slowly destroy what was once a loving bond.
