90 Kano inmates graduate from rehabilitation programme

Ninety inmates across three custodial centres in Kano State have graduated from a restorative justice programme organized by the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Kano State Command, in collaboration with the Prison Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Kano State Chapter.

The graduation ceremony covered participants from the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kurmawa; Goron Dutse Custodial Centre; and Janguza Custodial Centre.

According to the NCoS Kano Command’s Chief Public Relations Officer, CSC Musbahu Lawan K/Nassarawa, the initiative comprising The Prisoner’s Journey and the Sycamore Tree Project (TPJ/STP) focused on personal responsibility, forgiveness, reconciliation, and understanding the impact of crime on victims, families, and communities.

Speaking at the event, PFN Kano Chairman Pastor Anthony Igweka urged the inmates to utilize their time in custody for positive personal transformation.

The Kano State Controller of Corrections, Ahmed Yusuf Lakpene represented by Kurmawa Custodial Centre Officer-in-Charge, DCC Ibrahim Isah Rambo commended PFN for supporting the NCoS in fulfilling its mandate under the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019, which promotes inmate reformation, rehabilitation, and moral development.

In addition to presenting certificates to the 90 graduates, PFN provided food and drinks and facilitated the release of five inmates through its restorative justice coordinators, Pastor Mrs. Roseline Amaefula and Pastor Austin Ojehanon.
