President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that 2026 will mark a turning point in Nigeria’s budget execution, pledging tougher discipline, strict qqqtimelines and full accountability in the implementation of the proposed ₦58.47 trillion budget.

The President made the declaration on Friday while addressing a joint session of the National Assembly during the presentation of the 2026 Appropriation Bill.

Tinubu said his administration would no longer tolerate weak execution, overlaps or delays, stressing that every naira appropriated must align strictly with approved details and timelines.

“Let me be clear, 2026 will be a year of stronger discipline in budget execution,” the President said.

“I have issued directives to the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, the Accountant-General of the Federation and the Director-General of the Budget to ensure that the 2026 budget is implemented strictly in line with appropriate details and timelines,” he added.

The President expressed confidence that government revenues would improve in the coming year, driven by ongoing fiscal and sectoral reforms.

“We expect improved revenue performance through the new year,” Tinubu said.

According to him, recent reforms in taxation and the oil and gas sector are designed not just to boost revenue but to rebuild Nigeria’s fiscal framework on transparency, efficiency and fairness.

“The new national tax act and ongoing reforms in the oil and gas sector are not designed merely to raise revenue but to drive transparency, efficiency, fairness and long-term value in our fiscal architecture,” the President stated.
