Yuletide: DHQ deploys toops to flashpoints

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced the deployment of additional troops to identified dark spots and strategic locations across the country to guarantee safety during the Christmas celebrations. 

The military high command assured Nigerians of its firm commitment to security, noting that troops and special forces have been placed on high alert.

The Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, disclosed this in a statement, emphasizing that surveillance efforts have been significantly increased as the festive period approaches. 

He noted that aerial monitoring and intelligence gathering have been heightened to track the movement and communication patterns of suspected criminal groups, while air support elements are ready for rapid response.

According to General Onoja, specific directives have been issued to Unit Commanders in all theatres of operation.

"They have been mandated to strengthen patrols, establish fortified checkpoints, and maintain close collaboration with community leaders, local vigilante groups, and state security formations to secure vulnerable areas."

"The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN), working closely with other security agencies, have intensified operations across identified vulnerable areas. The security and stability of our nation remains our top priority, and every necessary measure is being taken to ensure that citizens celebrate Christmas in peace, unity, and joy," the statement read.

While calling for the cooperation of the public, the DHQ urged citizens to remain calm but vigilant. The statement advised residents to promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest security formation, assuring that all reports will be treated with urgency and confidentiality as public collaboration remains a critical component of national security.

The statement also conveyed the goodwill message of the Chief of Defence Staff, General O.O. Oluyede, who wished all citizens a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year, reaffirming the military's unwavering commitment to protecting the lives and property of all Nigerians.
