Young Engineers urged to embrace AI

The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Lagos Branch, has urged young engineers to develop skills in Artificial Intelligence (AI) to stay relevant in an increasingly technological landscape.

Chairman of NSE Lagos Branch, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, made the appeal during the graduateship induction ceremony organised by the branch in partnership with the Faculty of Engineering, University of Lagos, on Monday.

The event, which had the theme “AI Revolution in Engineering Entrepreneurship and Nation Building,” aimed to inspire new engineers to embrace AI as a crucial skill in the modern world.

While acknowledging the potential challenges of AI, such as fears of job displacement, Kesha stressed the importance of adapting to technological advancements. “You can’t stop the moving train. Either you jump on, or you will be left behind,” she said, encouraging the young engineers to seize the opportunity AI presents.

Mr. Dideolu Falobi, Managing Director of Kristal Laurel, supported Kesha’s remarks, emphasising that understanding AI principles and their practical applications would allow engineers to excel in various fields.

He said, “AI is the future, and its potential to revolutionise industries is immense. Any young engineer today must be knowledgeable about AI and how to integrate it into their work.”

The President of NSE, Mrs. Margaret Oguntala, who was represented by Mr Ayo Ogunaike, a former Chairman of the Lagos Branch, expressed her hopes that all the inductees would become full corporate members of the NSE within the next four years.

Oguntala also highlighted the benefits of joining the NSE, which has five branches in Lagos and a total of 86 branches globally. She mentioned that the upcoming NSE annual general meeting would be held in Ibadan.

At the ceremony, 504 graduates from various fields of engineering were inducted into the NSE.

Earlier, the inductees participated in a procession from the UNILAG Faculty of Engineering to the Oyebolu Engineering Resource Centre at the Works and Physical Planning Department, where they took their induction oath.
