World Teachers’ Day: Ekiti ASUSS celebrate retirees

Over 100 members of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Ekiti State chapter who have just retired on Monday smiled home with expensive gifts and cash presented to them by leadership of the union.
The ceremony which was set aside to commemorate this year’s World Teachers Day, also featured the presentation of gifts and cash to some outstanding students who participated at the essay competition organized by the union.
Speaking at the ceremony, Chairman Ekiti State Teaching Service Commission, Mr. Babatunde Abegunde expressed satisfaction with the services and contributions of secondary school teachers to the growth of education in the state.
Mr. Abegunde affirmed the determination of government to defray all outstanding salaries and allowances owed teachers as soon as the state’s economy improves so as to boost the morale of the teachers towards sustaining the tempo.
Speaking with Nigerian NewsDirect in Ado-Ekiti, the chairman of ASUSS, comrade Sola Adigun stressed the need for government to increase funding of education so as to cater for regular training of teachers particularly in ICT and contemporary teaching mechanism, recruit experienced teachers and improve infrastructure for better productivity.
Some invited guests who spoke on the occasion commended the welfare package of ASUSS as well as the leadership style of its chairman of Comrade Adigun, which had enabled the union to record unprecedented successes especially the building of an edifice which serves as its secretariat.
Some of the retirees who spoke with Nigerian NewsDirect Reporter as well as students who got cash and material gifts appreciated the leadership of ASUSS for the recognition which they say would encourage hard work and diligence in the society.
Activities of the union continue on Tuesday with a gala night.
