Woman, daughter missing as inheritance dispute escalates in Abuja

A 37-year-old woman, Miss Nwaigwe Chinenye, and her three-year-old daughter have reportedly gone into hiding in the Federal Capital Territory following an alleged prolonged family dispute over inheritance.
Chinenye, a self-employed graduate who was said to be residing at No. 17B Sambo Lai Street, Saqwari Layout, Dutse Alhaji, Abuja, was reportedly forced to abandon her home after tensions surrounding properties allegedly left behind by her late father escalated within the family.
Family sources and neighbours familiar with the matter told our correspondent that the dispute, which had been brewing quietly for some time, allegedly worsened after disagreements emerged over ownership and control of the deceased’s assets.
According to sources, the conflict created sharp divisions among family members, with accusations, threats, and intimidation allegedly becoming frequent occurrences.
A relative, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the matter, disclosed that Chinenye had allegedly been under intense pressure from some members of the extended family over issues linked to inheritance and property control.
The source alleged that the situation became more alarming after repeated disagreements over who should take possession of certain assets left behind by her late father.
“She became increasingly afraid because of the tension surrounding the properties. Things reportedly got to a point where she felt remaining in the house could endanger her life and that of her little daughter,” the source said.
Another source familiar with the dispute claimed that Chinenye had become withdrawn in recent months, allegedly confiding in close associates about fears for her safety amid the growing hostility within the family.
“She has a three-year-old daughter to care for, and people close to her became worried after she suddenly disappeared from public view. Many believe the inheritance dispute played a major role in her decision to go into hiding,” the source added.
Neighbours in the Dutse Alhaji area also confirmed that the woman had not been seen around her residence for some time, fuelling speculation over her whereabouts and safety.
One resident, who identified her simply as Chioma, said the development had generated anxiety among people living in the area.
“She hardly had issues with anybody around here. People only started hearing about family problems connected to property and inheritance. Then suddenly, she and her child were nowhere to be found,” the resident said.
Findings showed that disputes over inheritance and control of family property have remained a recurring source of conflict in many parts of the country, often degenerating into prolonged court battles, violence, and family breakdowns.
As of the time of filing this report, efforts to independently confirm the exact nature of the disputed assets and obtain comments from other members of the family were unsuccessful.
The whereabouts of Chinenye and her daughter, identified as Kamsiyochukwu Stephanie, could also not be immediately confirmed, although sources insisted they had gone into hiding out of fear over the escalating family crisis.
