We are within the confines of law to remand El-Rufai — ICPC Spokesperson

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has declared that it is acting within the confines of the law regarding the ongoing detention and legal proceedings involving Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State.
The anti-graft agency’s statement follows actions by a El-Rufai Support Group Association which hired a Washington DC-based international advocacy organization, Vanguard Africa, to spearhead a public relations campaign aimed at exposing what they described as an abuse of legal procedures and a disregard for the rule of law within Nigeria.
Reacting, ICPC spokesperson John Odey noted that all actions taken by the agency are legally motivated rather than politically driven.
He emphasized that the commission adheres strictly to statutory boundaries and that the former governor’s confinement is backed by a valid judicial remand order rather than arbitrary choice.
While acknowledging that individuals are free to seek external advocacy, Odey maintained that domestic operations must still respect existing legal frameworks.
He also refuted allegations that the agency is serving as a political tool.
Describing the ICPC as an impartial law enforcement body governed entirely by its founding Act, Odey stated that political affiliations, social standing, or professional roles whether an individual is a low-level civil servant, a private contractor, or a prominent politician hold no bearing on prosecutions.
He reiterated that the commission lacks political ties and functions strictly outside the realm of party politics.
