WAFCON triumph: Present, past Ebonyi sports commissioners laud Super Falcons

The Ebonyi Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Richard Idike, has commended the Super Falcons for lifting their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title, in Morocco on Saturday.

News Men report that the team staged a dramatic comeback to beat hosts Morocco 3-2 in the presence of Gianni Infantino, President of Federation of International Football (FIFA), and other football governing body executive members.

Idike said the Falcons demonstrated the “never say die” spirit which Nigeria is known for.

“When the team was two goals down in the first half, I had no doubt that it would bounce back.

“The team had been impeccable all through the tournament, smashing Zambia and dethroning defending champions, South Africa in the process,” he said

He, however, called for a paradigm shift in the team’s dominance of continental football to the world stage.

“The Super Falcons have dominated African football enough and should now shift attention to conquering the world.

“We are tired of its early eliminations and near-misses in global competitions,” he said.

Charles Akpu-enika, the Immediate Past Commissioner for Sports, described the feat as a reflection of Nigeria”s impeccable dominance of African women football.

Akpu-enika said the team’s victory was a soothing balm to the pains of Nigeria’s present football fortunes.

“I urge President Bola Tinubu and football loving Nigerians to appreciate the team for this wonderful feat.

“This feat should be a motivation to other national teams especially the Super Eagles whose World Cup fortune is hanging in the balance,” he said.

He also urged the Super Falcons to replicate such continental triumph on the global stage to firmly announce their arrival as champions.

“Relevant football authorities in the country should evolve modalities to ensure that Nigeria transits to a global football power-house,” he said.
