UNILAG raises alarm over syndicate using VC’s identity to defraud Nigerians

The University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, has raised alarm over the activities of fraudsters impersonating the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Folasade Ogunsola.
The university said the criminals are using her identity to defraud unsuspecting members of the public through fake procurement deals.
The university disclosed that the fraudsters are reaching out to victims via LinkedIn, Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and WhatsApp.
The fraudsters reportedly pose as the Vice-Chancellor and lure individuals with fake laptop and computer supply contracts.
The criminals allegedly ask their victims to keep the deal secret and make upfront payments.
The syndicate is said to propose a 60/40 illegal profit-sharing arrangement in exchange for awarding fake contracts.
The university said the fraudsters direct communications to personal emails and not the official university domain.
The university stated that such requests never come from UNILAG or any legitimate official of the institution.
UNILAG said all procurement activities are carried out through transparent, competitive processes in full compliance with Nigerian procurement laws.
The university warned that no official would ever request kickbacks or handle official transactions through informal platforms.
The institution confirmed that the matter has been escalated to law enforcement agencies.
UNILAG stated that it is fully cooperating with investigators to identify and prosecute those behind the scam.
The university urged the public to exercise caution when dealing with such messages.
The institution warned that any communication suggesting procurement from the VC or university officials outside official channels is fraudulent.
UNILAG advised victims or suspicious recipients to report such messages immediately.
The university said official emails should be verified through communicationunit@unilag.edu.ng or vcoffice@unilag.edu.ng.
UNILAG reaffirmed its commitment to integrity, transparency, and public accountability.
