UNILAG launches solar-powered buses for zero emission initiative

By Sodiq Adelakun

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) on Monday unveiled a new fleet of solar-powered buses as part of its commitment to achieving zero-emission transportation.

The buses, which are also designed to run on electricity, were inaugurated at a media event in Lagos attended by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola.

While unveiling the buses and an updated university logo, Prof. Ogunsola stressed the importance of sustainable practices in maintaining the institution’s commitment to environmental health.

She explained that the buses were created and donated by two UNILAG alumni, founders of Ogata Global Resources and Chart Eco Global Services.

“These buses will significantly contribute to public transportation while helping to reduce pollution. UNILAG is committed to preserving its air quality, and one of the major contributors to pollution is emissions from vehicles. These solar-powered buses will play a vital role in curbing that,” Prof. Ogunsola stated.

The new fleet is part of UNILAG’s broader sustainability agenda, aiming to ensure its operations align with global environmental standards. The university also unveiled its updated logo.

“The old logo no longer represents the current identity of UNILAG. We want our stakeholders to embrace and use the updated version to showcase our growth and vision,” she added.
