UNILAG clarifies alleged fee hike, says no increase in charges

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has addressed widespread reports suggesting a rise in student fees for the 2025/2026 academic session, clarifying that there has been no increase.
In an official statement on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, the Head of the Communication Unit, Mrs Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, explained that the university had consolidated previously separate fees from faculties and departments into a single payment structure on students’ central portals.
It readd partly: “In compliance with a directive from the Federal Ministry of Education, all universities with students benefiting from the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) have been instructed to unify all payable fees into a single structure,” the statement read.
The university emphasised that the amounts now reflected on the student portals are programme-specific and include all legitimate dues previously collected separately.
The move ensures that once students make payments via their official portal, no further charges will be required at faculty or departmental levels.
“This does not amount to a fee hike but an integration of previously separate, legitimate dues,” UNILAG Management said, adding that the system allows NELFUND to accurately capture and pay all fees due on behalf of students.
UNILAG reassured students, parents, and the general public that the consolidation was aimed at enhancing transparency, removing hidden costs, and ensuring smooth loan disbursements for beneficiaries.
The management also expressed appreciation for the understanding and cooperation of all stakeholders as the university continues to uphold its legacy of excellence and accountability.
“The University remains committed to better positioning its students nationally and internationally,” the statement added.
