Two female university students declared wanted for lesbianism

Two female students from Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island, Bayelsa State, are currently on the run over alleged acts of lesbianism.

The two students, Ruth Cadmus and Brenda Uti, were caught engaging in lesbian acts in the toilet at the girls’ hostel in the university in June 2023 by fellow students.

They were dragged out and beaten by hostel mates who handed them over to the police, and they were charged in court.

However, after being granted bail by the court, they jumped bail, leading to the police declaring them wanted.

It is recalled that during the tenure of former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, homosexuality was declared illegal, attracting a 14-year prison sentence.

Like Ruth and Brenda, several individuals have been arrested and prosecuted for homosexuality in Nigeria, while others have gone into hiding for fear of victimization.

Nigeria’s highly religious society has also made it difficult for gay individuals to openly display their sexual behaviors, as they are treated as outcasts.
