Tragic death of elderly man in Ijebu Ode pinked to alleged family intimidation

A cloud of grief and controversy hangs over the Aresa family following the sudden passing of Mr. Aresa Nasiru.

The elderly man’s death has sparked urgent calls for justice and an investigation into allegations of systemic bullying and intimidation by his own relatives over a disputed family matter.

According to eyewitness accounts and reports from close associates, Mr. Nasiru’s health took a fatal turn following a high-tension confrontation at his residence.

The deceased had reportedly relocated from Oshogbo to Ijebu Ode in a bid to escape ongoing friction within the family, only to be tracked down by several individuals identified as Mr. Aresa Semiu, Mr. Aresa Waheed, Mr. Aresa Nurudeen, and Mr. Aresa Muniru.

The confrontation allegedly centered on the whereabouts of Najaht Bewaji Aresa, the five-year-old daughter of Mr. Kehinde Aresa.

Witnesses claim the visiting party, accompanied by several unidentified individuals, issued stern ultimatums to the late Mr. Nasiru. They demanded he produce the child and her mother, reportedly citing a failure to produce the family’s first child during a similar incident in 2023.

The atmosphere during the encounter was described as overwhelming and deeply distressing.

Sources close to the deceased suggest the severe emotional shock and the chaos brought on by the intimidation were the primary triggers for his subsequent passing.

Despite the gravity of the situation, early attempts to involve law enforcement met a stalemate. Local police reportedly classified the incident as a civil matter, advising that the dispute be resolved internally through family channels.

This response has drawn criticism from community members who argue that the line between a family matter and criminal harassment was crossed when threats and physical intimidation led to a loss of life.

The case has now become a focal point for advocates calling for the abolition of harmful family traditions and rituals. There is a growing appeal to Nigerian authorities to intervene in cases where tradition is used as a veil for bullying and the endangerment of vulnerable family members.

While the community mourns Mr. Nasiru, it has been confirmed that his son, Mr. Kehinde Aresa, along with his immediate family, is currently residing in Germany. Their safety abroad highlights the lengths to which individuals are now going to escape what they describe as oppressive domestic environments.

Authorities are being urged to investigate the circumstances surrounding Mr. Nasiru’s death to prevent such tragedies from befalling other families caught in similar cycles of intimidation.
