Tinubu launches N151.9bn electric vehicle program in Northeast
By Seun Ibiyemi
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved nearly $100 million (¦ 151.9 billion) to implement a large-scale electric vehicle (EV) transportation project in northeast Nigeria. This initiative aligns with the government’s strategy to reduce carbon emissions, modernise public transport, and promote energy efficiency.
Under the scheme, Bluecrest Integrated Concept Limited will supply ten 17-seater electric buses within six months for ¦ 2.9 billion.
In addition, 10,000 electric tricycles will be delivered by Mutual Commitment Company Limited, Shanghai Integrated Infrastructure Development, and Sinoma Investment International Limited. Each e-tricycle will have space for nine passengers and a driver.
As part of the rollout, HNCEGC will provide 237 electric vehicles, including BYD Dolphin, BYD Qin Plus, and BYD Yuan Plus models, at a cost of ¦ 16.3 billion. Furthermore, KB Laman Motors Nigeria Limited will install charging stations for both e-buses and e-tricycles for ¦ 8.4 billion.
The project is being funded by the North East Development Commission (NEDC) as part of broader efforts to enhance sustainable mobility in the region.
President Bola Tinubu initially approved the electric vehicle acquisition plan in October 2024 and personally inspected the vehicle models, charging stations, and battery systems before the contracts were awarded.
This initiative is expected to reduce fuel dependency, improve transportation infrastructure, and accelerate Nigeria’s transition to clean energy mobility in the northeast.
