Thousands of supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday gathered in Ado Ekiti to welcome the party’s governorship candidate, Dr. Wole Oluyede.
The rally followed the publication of his name on the portal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the PDP candidate for the 2026 Ekiti governorship election after a court judgment.
Addressing party members and supporters, Oluyede expressed appreciation for their support despite what he described as political challenges during the party’s primary process.
He also commended the judiciary for resolving disputes surrounding the primaries, noting that the court’s decision upheld the rule of law.
Oluyede, who noted that he resides and works in Australia, said he has remained actively involved in Ekiti politics and maintains strong ties with the state through investments and regular engagement.
The PDP candidate used the occasion to criticise the administration of Biodun Oyebanji, alleging that economic and social conditions in the state have declined.
He claimed that the government has failed to deliver on key promises, citing concerns over infrastructure, employment, and security.
Oluyede also raised issues regarding the state of public hospitals and the education sector, calling for increased investment, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
On national politics, he said his political philosophy allows him to support credible leadership regardless of party affiliation.
He also clarified that he has no personal dispute with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, describing him as a fellow party member.
However, he criticised some PDP members in Ekiti State for allegedly supporting candidates of other parties, describing such actions as counterproductive.

Speaking at the rally, the state PDP Chairman, Rt. Hon. Tunji Odeyemi, reaffirmed Oluyede as the party’s legitimate candidate for the election.
He expressed confidence in the party’s chances, stating that internal issues had been resolved and that the PDP is united.
Odeyemi also dismissed claims of factional leadership within the party in the state.
He further criticised alleged attempts by the federal government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to weaken opposition parties, warning that such actions could undermine democracy.
Former senator Duro Faseyi urged party members to mobilise voters across their wards ahead of the election.
Similarly, Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council in Ekiti State, Adeniji Akapo Philip, described the forthcoming election as a contest between the ruling elite and the people.
Other speakers included Chief Adeola Ogunrinde, representing the party’s National Executive Committee, and former Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Kola Oluwawole.
Leaders of the Ebira and Hausa communities also pledged support for the PDP candidate.
In his closing remarks, Oluyede assured supporters that his administration would prioritise infrastructure, education, and job creation if elected.
He also announced plans for a statewide mobilisation tour across the three senatorial districts ahead of the 2026 governorship election.
