There is No End Here

By Timileyin Adepoju

The body is capable of miracles.
After the shootout, blood folds
into a halo and the angels
forsake their songs— the sight
is a tempo brimmed with loops.
What overcomers my people are?
Their bones have tamed heaven
to its rot— the linen hosts
the sky in a feast of abundance.
The incinerator is gagged with dreams,
and the flames gift wings to hopes.
The fault is in the interpretation.
I promise you: though in another vessel
we desire the trickling drool of God,
We are familiar with recipes of loss—
massacre, kidnapping. We are familiar
with what follows a blackout—
bodies scrambling for livelihood. Here,
the tunnel feast on the lighting meant for its end.
