The dangerous side effects of overusing painkillers

Painkillers are among the most commonly used drugs in Nigeria. From headaches to joint pains, many people rely on them daily without thinking twice. While they bring quick relief, overusing painkillers can have dangerous side effects that most people ignore until it is too late.
Liver and kidney damage
Continuous use of painkillers like paracetamol or ibuprofen in high doses can damage the liver and kidneys. These organs are responsible for filtering drugs, and long-term abuse can lead to organ failure.
Stomach ulcers and bleeding
Many painkillers irritate the stomach lining. Overuse increases the risk of ulcers, internal bleeding, and severe abdominal pain that may require urgent medical treatment.
Addiction and dependence
Some strong painkillers contain opioids, which can cause dependency when taken frequently. People may begin to crave the drug, making it hard to function without constant use.
Weakened immune system
Excessive painkiller use can weaken the body’s natural defence, making it harder to fight infections. This leaves users vulnerable to frequent illnesses.
Heart risks
Research shows that prolonged use of certain painkillers increases the risk of high blood pressure, stroke, and heart attacks.
Masking underlying illnesses
Relying too much on painkillers hides the real cause of pain. Serious conditions like infections, ulcers, or even cancers may go undetected because the pain is constantly suppressed.
