TETFund: Tinubu approves over N700bn for tertiary institutions in 2025

President Bola Tinubu has sanctioned the allocation of more than N700 billion for tertiary institutions benefiting from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) in the 2025 financial year.

The Executive Secretary of TETFund, Sonny Echono, announced this development during the 2025 Strategic Planning Meeting with heads of tertiary institutions in Abuja on Thursday.

Echono explained the structure of the 2025 disbursement, stating: “The total direct disbursement accounts for 91.08 per cent, comprising 48.90 per cent allocated as annual direct disbursement and 42.18 per cent as special direct disbursement. Additionally, 8.72 per cent is earmarked for designated projects, while stabilisation funds constitute 0.20 per cent.”

He further outlined the specific allocations, revealing that each university would receive N2.8 billion, polytechnics N1.9 billion, and colleges of education N2.1 billion under the annual direct disbursement.

“Our intervention efforts have expanded considerably, aligning with national priorities set out in the Education Sector Road Map under President Bola Tinubu’s administration and spearheaded by the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa,” Echono stated.

He added that, in accordance with the Federal Government’s directives, all allocations for physical infrastructure development in 2025 would be dedicated to the refurbishment, renovation, and enhancement of outdated infrastructure in the beneficiary institutions.

“This information was conveyed to you (heads of tertiary institutions) in advance to allow for thorough consultations and adequate preparation for project implementation.

“You are also encouraged to utilise the expertise of your consultancy units or physical planning units when formulating project plans for the current disbursement cycle,” he advised.

Echono further noted that TETFund had significantly increased funding for research and innovation, academic staff training and development, as well as manuscript and book production.

He also disclosed that the number of beneficiary institutions had been expanded under the fund’s special and designated projects.

The Executive Secretary urged heads of the beneficiary institutions to commence the implementation of their allocations promptly.

He emphasised the need for extensive consultation with institutional stakeholders to ensure effective execution of TETFund projects and stressed the importance of making timely payments to contractors and vendors.

“I call on all heads of beneficiary institutions to ensure the complete utilisation of their 2024 and previous allocations while expediting the procurement process to gain access to their 2025 allocations,” Echono concluded.
