TCN refutes BEDC’s assertion on electricity supply issues in parts of Delta

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has rejected claims by the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) that its maintenance activities were responsible for BEDC’s inability to supply electricity to its 33kV customers in certain areas of Delta State.

This rebuttal was contained in a statement issued over the weekend by the TCN General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah.

The statement was in response to BEDC’s 14th March social media post, which attributed power supply disruptions to maintenance work carried out by TCN.

According to BEDC’s announcement on Friday, the areas affected by power supply shortages included Abraka Commercial, Industrial Commercial, Ughelli/Shell, Sapele (Sapele), and Abraka.

The BEDC statement read in part: “Dear Valued Customer, We sincerely apologise for not meeting the required minimum service level of 20 hours on the feeder below.”

The distribution company listed the affected areas and attributed the supply disruptions to TCN’s maintenance activities.

However, TCN clarified that it had conducted a planned outage on 11th March at the Amukpe Transmission Station, which was completed on the same day, with bulk power supply immediately restored.

“Contrary to BEDC’s assertions, TCN’s maintenance activities did not cause the power supply issues experienced by BEDC’s customers,” the statement emphasised.

TCN acknowledged that the only accurate aspect of BEDC’s statement was the tripping of the Ughelli/Shell 33kV feeder T1 60MVA on 14th March due to a fault, which TCN is actively addressing.

However, it maintained that all other areas referenced by BEDC as experiencing power disruptions were affected by faults on BEDC’s 33kV feeders.

“The only correct detail in BEDC’s publication was the reference to the Ughelli/Shell 33kV feeder T1 60MVA, which tripped due to a fault on 14th March 2025. TCN is currently working to restore bulk power supply to the affected feeder.

“It is important to clarify that all other areas mentioned by BEDC in their report, experiencing power supply difficulties, are the result of faults on their own (BEDC’s) 33kV feeders. TCN urges BEDC to provide accurate information to its customers, presenting the facts correctly for the benefit of all stakeholders,” the statement further noted.

TCN reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring efficient and dependable transmission of electricity nationwide.

The company also called on BEDC to provide truthful information to its customers and refrain from distorting facts.
