Why Nigerians must leverage on opportunities in data privacy ecosystem- NDPB By Ogaga Ariemu  The Nigeria Data Protection Bureau, NDPB has charged Nigerians on the importance of data privacy and rights. The National Commissioner of NDPB, Dr Vincent Olatunji stated this recently at a training workshop for members of the Nigeria Information Technology Reporters Association in Abuja. He urged media practitioners to be in tune with relevant policies in terms of data privacy and protection laws. “The media are critical partners in our bureau, and this prompted us to engage in the training exercise. We want you to share knowledge about data privacy and protection to the public. “We are constantly training people to be up to date about data privacy while online. A lot of activities go on online daily. We want the media to create more awareness to the public about the opportunities in the digital economy”, he said. He further added that NDPB is in partnership with data controllers to create awareness for different organizations in the country. “Our agency is creating opportunities in different sectors and industries. Nigerians must leverage the existing gap in the industry. We are working with Data Processing Officers that work with different organisations. We assist them with mining information that will benefit the public and the country”, he said. The Head of Legal Enforcement NDPB, Barrister Babatunde Bamigboye, said adequate ethical measures must be in place regarding data management. He urged NITRA members to play a great role in informing the public about the issue of data. “It is important to ensure that the public is informed about the issue of data privacy and management. This is a threshold issue in terms of ICT and the right techniques and information must be put in place in terms of data privacy”, he said.
