System upgrade: CAC shifts document download penalties to September

The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has postponed the enforcement of new charges for downloading approved documents on its upgraded Company Registration Portal after technical hitches and complaints from users.
Originally slated to take effect on August 1, the enforcement will now begin on September 1, 2025. Under the new directive, penalties will apply to users who fail to download approved documents within seven days of their availability on the portal.
In a public notice, the Commission explained that the postponement followed persistent difficulties reported since the platform’s recent upgrade. Users cited problems downloading incorporation documents, delays in payment processing, complications with post-incorporation filings for business names and difficulties uploading required documents.
CAC said the extension was intended to reduce pressure on businesses and stakeholders adjusting to the new portal. It added that the move would provide time for system refinements already in progress to improve the user experience.
“We are working tirelessly, alongside our technical partners and stakeholders, to stabilise the system without shutting down the entire portal,” the Commission stated, warning that a complete shutdown would disrupt business operations nationwide.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to delivering efficient and dependable services throughout this transitional period. It described the one-month extension as a temporary relief to cushion the effects of the ongoing adjustments.
Customers have been encouraged to use the additional grace period to complete their filings and downloads without incurring extra charges. The Commission also reiterated its commitment to improving the platform’s functionality to meet the needs of registered businesses, legal professionals and the wider public.
The Company Registration Portal remains a central digital hub for business registration, incorporation and post-incorporation services in Nigeria. The upgrade forms part of broader reforms aimed at simplifying procedures and reducing bottlenecks in corporate filings.
Despite early-stage challenges, the Commission maintained that the long-term advantages of the upgraded system would outweigh the temporary setbacks. Stakeholders were advised to monitor official channels for further guidance on portal usage.
