Super Eagles held to 1-1 draw by South Africa in World Cup qualifier

Nigeria’s Super Eagles were held to a 1-1 draw by South Africa’s Bafana Bafana at the Free State Stadium on Tuesday, leaving both sides with a single point in their World Cup qualifying group.
The match started with South Africa pressing aggressively, looking to take advantage of home conditions. Nigeria had an early chance in the 10th minute when Ademola Lookman delivered a precise cross from the right, but South African goalkeeper Foster cleared the danger.
The visitors fell behind in the 25th minute when Nigeria’s captain, William Troost-Ekong, deflected the ball into his own net under pressure from the hosts, giving South Africa an early lead.
Nigeria responded before half-time, with Bassey scoring a header to level the match at 1-1. The goal came amid some controversy, but it boosted the Super Eagles’ morale going into the break.
In the second half, Nigeria made two substitutions to strengthen the attack. Arokodare replaced Dessers, and Onyemaechi came on for Troost-Ekong. Arokodare made an immediate impact, driving down the left wing and forcing the South African defence to react.
Dele-Bashiru also tested the opposition from distance, but his effort was blocked. Despite controlling much of the ball, Nigeria was unable to break through South Africa’s resilient defence.
South Africa made substitutions of their own, including Monyane and Mbatha, to manage injuries and maintain stamina in the closing stages.
Nigeria’s Uche also had a late chance to score but missed narrowly.
