Structured approach to tourism development can boost Nigerian economy — GGM Continental Hotels

Group General Manager of Continental Hotels, Karl Hala has called for a more structured approach to tourism development in Nigeria, emphasizing the urgent need for coordination and alignment among industry stakeholders.
The Continental Hotels Group manages two of the nation’s most iconic hospitality landmarks: the Lagos Continental and Abuja Continental hotels.
Speaking at the Eko Vanguard International Summit and Awards (E-VISA 2026), Hala highlighted Nigeria’s immense tourism potential, citing its rich cultural heritage, youthful population, and strategic geographic location.
However, he noted that the sector remains underdeveloped due to significant gaps in infrastructure, specialized skills, and global marketing.
"Tourism is not a secondary issue; it is strategic. It creates jobs, drives SMEs, supports culture, and attracts foreign exchange. We need to take a more structured approach to development, leveraging our unique cultural and natural assets to drive economic growth," Hala emphasized.
Hala praised recent government efforts to promote the sector, specifically citing initiatives like the "Good News Nigeria" campaign.
He stressed the necessity of concerted efforts to counter negative international perceptions and promote a more positive narrative of the Nigerian experience.
The E-VISA 2026 event brought together leaders from both the public and private sectors to explore ways to harness Nigeria’s tourism potential.
Participants committed to working together to promote sustainable tourism practices, job creation, and long-term economic stability.
Hala’s call for a structured framework has been widely welcomed by industry stakeholders, who acknowledge that better alignment is the key to unlocking the sector’s multi-billion naira potential.
Following his address, Hala was presented with an award plaque by HRH Erelu (Dr. Chevalier) Abiola Dosumu, a distinguished member of the Board of Trustees for the Eko Tourism Foundation, in recognition of his significant contributions to Nigeria's culture and tourism ecosystem.
As Nigeria seeks to diversify its economy away from oil, tourism development is increasingly viewed as a critical pillar of the country's growth strategy. With its vast cultural wealth and natural beauty, Nigeria remains poised to become a major player in the global tourism industry.
