Karl Hala, Group General Manager of Continental Hotel Group, has called for a more structured approach to tourism development in Nigeria, stressing the need for coordination among stakeholders.

The Continental Hotel Group manages Lagos Continental Hotel and Abuja Continental Hotel.

Hala spoke at the Eko Vanguard International Summit and Awards 2026 (E-VISA 2026), where he highlighted Nigeria’s tourism potential, citing its cultural heritage, youthful population, and strategic location.

Despite these advantages, he said the sector remains underdeveloped, with gaps in infrastructure, skills, and marketing.

“Tourism is not a secondary issue, it is strategic,” he said.

“It creates jobs, drives SMEs, supports culture, and attracts foreign exchange. We need a structured approach to tourism development, leveraging our cultural and natural assets to drive economic growth.”

Hala commended government efforts to promote tourism, including initiatives such as the “Good News Nigeria” campaign.

He, however, stressed the need for sustained efforts to address negative perceptions and project a more positive image of the country.

The event brought together stakeholders from the public and private sectors to explore ways of harnessing Nigeria’s tourism potential.

Participants emphasised the need for collaboration to promote sustainable tourism, create jobs, and support economic growth.

Hala’s position was welcomed by industry stakeholders, who acknowledged the importance of coordination in unlocking the sector’s potential.

He was later presented with an award by Abiola Dosumu, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Eko Tourism Foundation, in recognition of his contributions to the culture and tourism ecosystem in Nigeria.

As Nigeria seeks to diversify its economy, tourism is increasingly seen as a critical component of growth.

With its cultural heritage and natural attractions, the country has the potential to emerge as a major player in the global tourism industry.
