Shippers’ Council, UNILAG to collaborate on maritime training, policy reform

The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has expressed its willingness to collaborate with the University of Lagos (UNILAG), through its Institute of Maritime Studies (IMS) and Department of Commercial and Industrial Law, to bolster training, capacity-building, and policy development in Nigeria’s maritime sector.

This intention was announced during a courtesy visit by a UNILAG delegation to the NSC headquarters in Lagos, led by Professor Wale Olawoyin, SAN, Head of the Department of Commercial and Industrial Law.

Welcoming the delegation, the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the NSC, Dr Akutah Pius, MON, described the proposed alliance as both timely and strategic, noting its potential to support the Council’s mandate and sectoral growth.

Dr Akutah reaffirmed the Council’s dedication to introducing practical, outcome-driven training initiatives that address contemporary challenges within the maritime industry and improve institutional efficiency.

“We are focused on strengthening our human capital, and this partnership offers a valuable pathway to deepen our capacity and improve sector performance,” he said.

Professor Olawoyin applauded the Council’s forward-looking approach and stated that UNILAG is well-positioned to contribute to maritime sector development through academic research, training, and advisory services.

“There is great potential in a well-structured partnership with the Shippers’ Council, and we believe our collaboration can support the advancement of Nigeria’s maritime interests,” he noted.

The visit signals the beginning of what both institutions envision as a sustained, impactful relationship geared towards developing local expertise, supporting evidence-based policymaking, and advancing Nigeria’s maritime and blue economy agenda.
