The Senate on Thursday confirmed the appointments of Mr Thompson Sunday as Managing Director and Dr Kabir Katata as Executive Director of the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC).
Their confirmation followed the consideration and approval of a report submitted by the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions during plenary. The report was presented by the committee chairman, Senator Abiru Adetokunbo (APC–Lagos).
According to Senator Adetokunbo, following a thorough screening process, the committee determined that the appointments complied with the provisions of the NDIC Act of 2023. He noted that the nominees demonstrated strong qualifications and suitability for their respective roles during the exercise.
“The nominees have the technical knowledge, sector-specific expertise and professional experience required for these important positions within the NDIC,” he stated.
He also confirmed that no petitions had been filed against either nominee and that both had been cleared by the Department of State Services.
The committee, he said, was convinced of their competence after detailed engagement, and thus recommended their confirmation by the Senate.
Deputy Senate President Barau Jubrin, who presided over the session, commended the committee’s efforts and remarked that the confirmations would help establish a solid governance structure for the NDIC.
Separately, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Basheer Lado, expressed confidence that the appointments would bolster public confidence in the country’s financial institutions.
President Tinubu had recently submitted the nominations to the National Assembly for screening and confirmation.
A statement issued by Sunday Iyogun, Assistant Director of Information and Public Relations in the adviser’s office, quoted Lado as making the remarks while presenting the nominees before the Senate Committee.
The nominees, Dr Thompson Oludare Sunday and Dr Kabir Sabo Katata, were described by Lado as individuals whose appointments reflect the President’s resolve to revitalise the financial sector through capable and trustworthy leadership.
“These selections are based on demonstrable competence, in-depth industry experience and alignment with the President’s vision to foster financial stability, safeguard depositors, and restore public confidence in the banking system,” Lado said.
In response, Senator Abiru thanked Lado for his continued efforts to foster a productive relationship between the Presidency and the Senate. He also assured that the committee would uphold transparency and fairness in line with legislative standards during the screening process.
