Sanwo-Olu swears in Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa as Agege LG Chairman

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday swore in Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa as the substantive Chairman of Agege Local Government Area, charging him to focus on grassroots development and align his administration with the state’s development agenda.
The swearing-in ceremony was held at Lagos House, Ikeja, and also featured the inauguration of Toyin Adejimiwa as a Permanent Secretary.
Obasa, who is the son of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, had been acting as chairman before his formal confirmation and inauguration.
Addressing the newly sworn-in officials, Governor Sanwo-Olu described local government as the tier of government closest to the people, stressing that it demands visible, responsive and compassionate leadership.
He urged the new Agege council chairman to govern inclusively, avoid divisive tendencies and prioritise measurable outcomes that directly impact residents.
The governor noted that discipline, performance and accountability remain key benchmarks for leadership in Lagos State.
Sanwo-Olu also acknowledged the presence of retired permanent secretaries at the event, describing them as exemplary public servants whose contributions continue to shape the state’s civil service.
Congratulating both Adejimiwa and Obasa, the governor expressed confidence that they would justify the trust placed in them and contribute meaningfully to the growth and development of Lagos State.
In their separate remarks, the newly sworn-in officials thanked the governor for the confidence reposed in them and pledged to uphold the core values, standards and service culture of the Lagos State public service.
Obasa’s emergence as substantive chairman followed the resignation of the former council chairman, Tunde Azeez, who stepped down in November due to persistent health challenges.
His resignation letter was read at a plenary session of the Agege Local Government Council, after which councillors unanimously confirmed Obasa, who had been acting in the role.
The swearing-in marks a new phase in the leadership of Agege Local Government Area, with expectations that the new chairman will strengthen governance and deliver people-focused development at the grassroots.
Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, the newly sworn-in Chairman of Agege Local Government, has announced an ambitious programme of infrastructure, health, education, and public safety projects aimed at transforming the council area.
Obasa, who took office after the resignation of former chairman Tunde Azeez due to health reasons, disclosed that the local government is currently executing 15 road and drainage projects and renovating 14 public schools to improve access, aesthetics, and functionality for residents.
The council boss also said that 10 health booths were being constructed to bring healthcare closer to the people and enhance public health and environmental safety.
“We are seeing a lot of roads and drains being fixed, with 15 projects currently underway in Agege Local Government Area. We also have 14 schools being renovated and 10 health booths being deployed to bring healthcare closer to our people,” Obasa said during his swearing-in at Lagos House, Ikeja on Monday.
According to Obasa, the local government has intensified efforts to maintain a clean and safe environment by eliminating hazards across communities and prioritising security.
“We are ensuring that all hazards are eliminated within our communities. Security is also a top priority for us to ensure that Agege is positioned as one of the top local governments in Nigeria,” he said.
The chairman further emphasised the council’s focus on people-oriented programmes, human capital development, poverty reduction, and economic empowerment for residents.
“For us, it is to go back and continue to improve the lives of our people, improve human capital, remove many of our people from poverty and carry out empowerment programmes so that more residents are economically engaged,” Obasa added.
On party unity, he stated that reconciliation efforts within the All Progressives Congress (APC) had begun following the primary elections, promising an inclusive government where all residents benefit from improvements in roads, schools, healthcare, and other services.
Obasa, who previously served as Vice Chairman of Agege Local Government, expressed commitment to deepening good governance, development, and community engagement throughout his tenure.
It was gathered that Obasa’s assumption of office follows unanimous confirmation by council members after he had been acting in the chairman role during his predecessor’s absence.
