Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has assured the indigenes of the state of his administration’s commitment to increasing the enrolment of youths into various military formations.

Sanwo-Olu gave this assurance on Monday during the departure ceremony of the 88 Regular Recruit Intakes (RRI) from Lagos State. The ceremony took place at the 9 Brigade Nigerian Army Cantonment in Maryland, Ikeja, Lagos.

Represented by his Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, the governor stated that the participation of Lagos indigenes in the military would significantly contribute to strengthening the nation’s security architecture.

He described the Nigerian Army as a symbol of the country’s resilience, valour, and indomitable spirit, and encouraged the recruits to remain dedicated to their commitment to the nation.

“By joining its ranks, you embrace a calling that transcends individual ambition, committing yourselves to the safety, stability, and prosperity of our country,” he said.

“This is no small feat, and we recognise the weight of your commitment, the sacrifices it entails, and the unwavering support you will require. Rest assured, the Nigerian Army is equally committed to your welfare throughout your service.”

The governor went on to urge the recruits to uphold the core values of integrity, professionalism, and loyalty, which he said would guide their military careers and define them as individuals dedicated to the service of humanity.

He also encouraged them to be good ambassadors of Lagos State, urging them to uphold the values of the Nigerian Army and make the state proud.

Earlier, Brig. Gen. Olawale Oyekola, the Commander of the 9 Brigade of the Nigerian Army at the Ikeja Cantonment, commended the Lagos State Government for its dedication to attracting more indigenes into the army’s recruitment process. Oyekola praised the state’s ongoing partnership with the Nigerian Army, particularly in terms of sensitisation programmes and empowerment initiatives for its personnel.

Providing details about the recruitment process, Oyekola revealed that 427 candidates were initially shortlisted. Of the 314 candidates who attended the screening, 144 were selected, comprising five females, 136 males, and three reserves. He confirmed that these recruits were now prepared for training at the Army Depot in Zaria.
