Salesman docked for alleged theft of N1.7m recharge cards

A 35-year-old salesman, Samuel Williams, was on Wednesday arraigned in a Kaduna Chief Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing recharge cards worth N1.7 million belonging to his employer.
Williams, who resides in Barnawa area of Kaduna, is facing a charge of breach of trust and stealing.
The prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence sometime between July and September at Barnawa complex Kaduna.
Leo said the defendant was employed by the complainant, Mr Nurudeen Ayodele, as a salesman for his recharge card business.
The prosecutor said that when the complainant decided to take stock of the cards, he discovered discrepancies in the proceeds.
He told the court that it was discovered that the defendant had stolen recharge cards worth N1.7million from the complainant.
Leo said the offence contravened Section 312 and 271 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
He said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of three years’ tax payment to the Kaduna State Government.
